Safe Internet Center and GNR in promotion of digital literacy

Fulfilling its mission of promoting the safe use of the Internet and making society aware of the risks associated with Internet use, the Safe Internet Center - a project coordinated by the FCT - is promoting, from May 3 to May 9, a joint action with the GNR, as part of the national project "Operation Seven Days with the Media".

The partnership between the Internet Segura (Safer Internet) Center and the GNR seeks to be an effective aid in preventive action regarding the deficit of media literacy and citizenship, creating awareness among a vulnerable age group for the need for caution in accessing information that reaches everyone through the use of the Internet.

The younger public is the main target of these 283 actions, taking place in national schools. Twelve thousand students, from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cycles of education, participate in sessions held with the support of 507 soldiers from the GNR Special Programs Sections.

Each action consists of the presentation of various relevant information about online safety, oriented according to the various age groups, exposing the dangers of the online world and ways to use the Internet safely in the different aspects: communication, socialization, accountability, and personal data protection.

To complement the information conveyed in the presentations, information materials will be distributed, made available by the Safe Internet Center (24,000 resources distributed), with details of everything young people need to know about preventing risky behavior inherent to Internet use, thus promoting safer, more conscious surfing.

The Safe Internet Center project, coordinated by the FCT, also includes as partners the Directorate-General for Education, the Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth, and Microsoft.

As an integrant member of GILM - Media Literacy Informal Group - the FCT, represented by the Department for the Information Society, is one of the entities responsible for the identification and intervention in the scope of Media Education, and thus appears as one of the promoter organizations of the initiative "Operation Seven Days with the Media". Through several activities carried out in public space, this Operation aims to raise awareness among citizens for the role and place that traditional and new generation media have in their daily lives.
