+Science, +Europe

The PERIN Journeys 2019 "+Science, +Europe" will take place between March and April, with diversified sessions in various parts of the country, in order to stimulate the strengthening of Portugal's participation in European research and innovation programs. This is a first cycle of days, but other events will follow until the Science 2019 meeting, from July 8 to 10, 2019.

The fact that we are two years away from the conclusion of the current European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (i.e. Horizon 2020) and in view of the definition of the major financial options of the European Union for 2021-2027, including the start of the new European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (i.e. Horizon Europe), the Digital Europe Programme and the European Space Programme, should serve as a stimulus to promote and deepen new European networks for science, technology and higher education and in the area of digital transformation, in close coordination with research and innovation activities. These networks should also be in articulation and complementary with our position in the world, from our Atlantic window to the unique relationship we have or may have in the development of Europe's relationship with Africa and Latin America. Internationalizing naturally includes the attraction and mobility of human resources, but it also includes joint institutional development, joint recruitment of teachers and researchers, and programmatic development at the European level.

In addition to pursuing these objectives, it is our ambition to reinforce and double Portugal's participation in the next European Framework Program for Research and Innovation (i.e., "Horizon Europe") compared to the current Framework Program (i.e., "Horizon 2020"); to stimulate participation in the new programs in the digital and space areas; and also to stimulate and promote national participation in the important Calls under Horizon 2020 that are planned for 2020 and that will bridge with the new program.

It is in this context of national priority that the promotion of research and development (R&D) activities, innovation and digital transformation has assumed in the framework of public policies and its effective insertion in the European context, that was programmed and assumed the ongoing evolution of the Office for Promotion of the Framework Program - GPPQ, created in 2007, for the network "PERIN - Portugal in Europe Research and Innovation Network".

The PERIN network includes:

- Group of Delegates, National Contact Points and Experts to the European Programs;

- Portugal-Europe Research and Innovation Liaison Office, - being set up in Brussels (i.e., "Portugal in Europe Research and Innovation Liaison Office");

- Network of Research and Innovation liaison officers (i.e., "Portugal in Europe Liaison Officers"), in place in different partnerships and international organizations;

- Network of Nuclei for the Promotion of Research and Innovation in the scope of European Programs, to be developed in national institutions of Science, Technology and Higher Education, including universities and polytechnics, research units, among others.
