FCT launches Arquivo.pt awards

FCT launches the first edition of Arquivo.pt Awards, a Call created to promote the use of Arquivo.pt's preservation service for old sites and to encourage and recognize research and the discovery of useful applications of the Portuguese web archive for society.

To compete, participants must submit, by May 4, a text and a short video describing the work done. Individual or group work may be submitted on any topic. The 1st prize is worth 10,000 euros, the 2nd prize 3,000 euros, and the 3rd prize 2,000 euros.

The Call will award original and innovative works that demonstrate the usefulness of the Arquivo.pt service and the importance of preserving and using information published on the web. The works must have Arquivo.pt as their main source of information and be practical applications or complete research studies, based on web information available in the archive.

Millions of pages are published on the Web every day. After a short time, the vast majority of this information is no longer available and is irremediably lost. Arquivo.pt is a research infrastructure managed by FCT that allows searching and accessing archived web pages. The main objective is to preserve information published on the web for memory, study and research purposes.

There are several examples of possible use of the contents preserved in this infrastructure. In 2017, the FCT, as part of the celebrations of its 20 years, presented the Time Tunnela journey into the digital past of the Foundation, using the history preserved in Arquivo.pt. Recently, TSF, celebrating its 30th anniversary, also used the Archive.pt for an infographic that invites you to an travel to the past through site the RadioIt is possible to follow its evolution and review important moments in Portugal and in the world.
