Researcher from the University of Aveiro becomes first Portuguese appointed to the European Academy of Sciences

This month, João Rocha, Director of the Research Center for Ceramic and Composite Materials (CICECO) at the University of Aveiro, became the first Portuguese scientist to be invited to belong to the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), an independent organization that brings together some of the most highly regarded European or European-resident academics and engineers.

Unanimously approved by the General Council of this academy, the Portuguese chemist joins a group of scientists who carry out cutting-edge research and technological development, united by the commitment to promote science and technology and the crucial roles they play in the economic and social development of modern societies.

"This nomination recognizes almost 25 years of work on behalf of Science by the working group, which I am proud to coordinate," the researcher and university professor said in a statement to the University of Aveiro.

João Rocha has more than 430 published scientific articles with more than 10 000 citations. He is Director of Associate Laboratory Research Center for Ceramic and Composite Materials, supported by FCT, evaluator of the European Research Council (ERC), and member of the National Council for Science and Technology and member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. In 2004 he was distinguished with the FCT Award for Scientific Excellence).
