More than 250 cities across Europe will celebrate science at the "European Researchers' Night" on September 30. Thousands of actions and activities are being organized, with the goal of showing in an interactive, educational and fun way what researchers actually do for society. Portugal is also joining in this celebration, with countless activities from North to South. The initiative is promoted every year by the European Commission, under the Marie Curie Actions.
The "European Researchers' Night" is an opportunity to divulge the work of great quality and innovation developed by Portuguese researchers and research centers, to the civil society. The European Commission's proposal is to give any citizen the experience of being a scientist for a day.
Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Santarém, Aveiro, Bragança, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Madeira, Castelo Branco and Azores are some of the regions that already have available the program of activities that will take place in the "European Researchers' Night". In total, 18 locations will offer free activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. In the interactive map, you can search which activities will take place near you.
The various programs offer multiple activities in the most diverse areas of knowledge. It will be possible to practice microsurgery with 3D models, perform scientific experiments, observe microorganisms under the microscope, 3D print objects, or interact with robots.
There are three consortia ensuring the "European Researchers' Night" project in Portugal. The FORESIGHT - Foreseeing Opportunities, Risks, Environmental and Security Issues for the next Generation: Highlighting Trends for 2030 consortium will have initiatives from north to south of the country, with the support of the National Network of Ciência Viva Centers in the field. SCILIFE - Science in everyday life divides its program among the regions of Lisbon, Porto and Minho. And Science in the North organizes a specific program in Porto, distributed between the Rosa Mota Pavilion and the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library.
