Portuguese Participatory Budgeting

(available only in English)

From January 9th to April 21st, the first phase of the Participatory Budgeting Portugal (OPP) will take place. OPP is a democratic, direct, and universal process through which citizens can decide on public investments in different areas of governance, including Science.

The total amount for OPP investments is 3 million euros.

In this first phase, citizens are invited to submit proposals in Participatory Meetings that take place in different locations around the country. The proposals to the OPP should be concrete ideas applicable to the areas of science, culture, agriculture, education and adult training, in the five NUTS II of the continent. In the Autonomous Regions, proposals in the areas of justice and internal administration will be accepted.

The ideas presented can be regional - with an impact on at least two municipalities in the same region - or national - with an impact on more than one region of the country. After undergoing technical evaluation, citizens will vote on the proposals. The most voted will be implemented by the respective governmental area.

The Participatory Budgeting Portugal does not replace the Participatory Science and Technology Programwhich will soon be launched by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
