Maria Madalena dos Santos Alves


Full Professor, PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Minho (UMinho). She was director of the Center for Biological Engineering (CEB), a position she held from January 2020 until she took office as President of FCT on July 1, 2022.

He graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto and obtained his master's degree in Biochemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico.

He has held positions of academic and scientific management and coordination at the University of Minho, including course directorship, participation in the School Council and in the Scientific Council of the School of Engineering.

Her research interest is in Environmental Biotechnology and she has oriented or co-oriented PhD students and post-doctoral researchers in this area and in interface areas. She was coordinator, co-coordinator or team member of numerous projects funded in national and European competitions. She collaborates with a network of international researchers, and attracted to the University of Minho a researcher who would win an ERC AdvG shared scientifically and financially with her research group. He has participated in several evaluation committees of international agencies, such as the Helmholtz Association (Germany), or the Irish and Swiss Science Foundations.

She has received several awards, including the Lettinga Award (2004), financed by international companies, BES innovation (2005) and the National Environmental Innovation Award (2006). In September 2009 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Technical University of Iasi in Romania. In January 2016 she received the honorary title of Citizen of Merit awarded by the Municipality of Viana do Castelo, where she was born.

Francisco João Duarte Cordeiro Correia dos Santos

Vice President

Full Professor at the Computer Engineering Department of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (UL), and researcher at INESC-ID.

He has been a professor at IST since 2012, where, in addition to his teaching and research activity, he has held several academic and scientific management positions.

He taught a wide range of subjects in the different study cycles, and was awarded the prize for excellence in teaching in all the years he taught at IST.

D. in Computer Engineering from the Free University of Brussels (Institute of Artificial Intelligence, IRIDIA-ULB, 2007). He was Senior Researcher (Chargé de Recherches, FRS-FNRS) in the Machine Learning group (MLG-ULB) of the same Belgian university, and Assistant Researcher at the Center for Artificial Intelligence of FCT/NOVA.

His research focuses on understanding collective phenomena that occur from the cellular level to human behavior. He has addressed problems such as the evolution of cooperation and social norms, the modeling of climate agreements and their institutions, and the role of technology and social networks in cooperation between humans, among others. These issues are addressed by developing and combining techniques from fields such as artificial intelligence, mathematical biology, experimental economics, and statistical physics.

His career as a researcher and lecturer has been the subject of several national and international distinctions, such as the CGD/University of Lisbon Award 2016, the 2017 Young Scientist Award in Socio-Econophysics from the German Physics Society (DPG), the "Blue Sky Paper" Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI, 2018), the Excellence Award 2022 given by IST's Pedagogical Council, or the nomination for the permanent Young Scientist Seminar (SJC) of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (2017-2021).

Amélia Maria Polónia da Silva


Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP) and member of the Academia Europaea - The Academy of Europe. She received her PhD in History (2000) and aggregation (2009) from the U. Porto, and an honorary doctorate in Maritime History from the Université Bretagne Sud (2020).

She has held academic and scientific management positions, of which we highlight the Scientific Coordination, since 2017, of CITCEM - Center for Transdisciplinary Research Culture, Space and Memory. She served as director of the Department of History and Political and International Studies of the FLUP, was co-coordinator of the European Interdisciplinary Master African Studies, an Erasmus + EJMD. She was part of the scientific committee of the European Joint Doctorate (EJD)TEEME (Text and Event in Early Modern Europe) and member of the EJD Marie Skłodowska-Curie MOVES (Migration and Modernity. Historical and Cultural Challenges).

Member of Advisory Boards of ERC AdvG and Starting Grants, she was coordinator of several national (FCT, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) and international (European Science Foundation, CYTED) funded research projects. Member of several Action Cost and other international research networks, she was coordinator and member of evaluation panels for national (FCT, A3ES) and international scientific and academic projects: European Science Foundation; FWO (Research Foundation Flanders); NWO (Netherlands); ARSS (Slovenian Research Agency), among others.

She was scientific advisor of post-doctoral projects, PhD students (national and international) and supervised, within CITCEM, the activity of junior researchers hired under stimulus programs for scientific employment.

Member of the editorial boards of Brill and Ashgate, she has published in journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science and in international publishers (Brill, Routledge, Palgrave-MacMillan, Bloomsbury). Her research is in the field of postcolonial studies. Her latest publications focus on the role of women as intermediaries and on the environmental impacts of Iberian colonization processes in the Early Modern Period.

She has been a visiting professor at universities in France, the USA, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, and India.

António Bob Moura Santos


He has a PhD in Economics from ISCTE-IUL, with the thesis "Public Policy oriented to Open Innovation" and a Master in Labor Sciences (2002) and a degree in Economics (1998), from ISCTE.

In 2021, he assumed the position of Executive Coordinator of the Programs "Impulso Jovens STEAM" and "Impulso Adultos" (Recovery and Resilience Plan), in the Directorate General of Higher Education. He joined the Board of Directors of ANI - National Agency for Innovation (2018-2021), as well as the Executive Committee of FITEC - Fund for Innovation, Technology and Circular Economy, being also representative of the areas of Science and Technology in the Economic and Social Council since 2017. Since 2019 he is National Delegate of the Permanent Working Group on Open Science and Innovation (OSI), of ERAC (European Research and Innovation Area Committee).

Since 2001 he has worked with various members of the Government in the area of Innovation Policy, having been part of the design, management and monitoring teams for PROINOV (Integrated Program to Support Innovation), as Deputy to the Prime Minister's Office, of the XIV Constitutional Government (2001-2002); for the Technological Plan and the Lisbon Strategy (2006-2009), at the Coordination Office for the Technological Plan and the Lisbon Strategy, Presidency of the Council of Ministers; of the Digital Agenda (2015) and National Reform Plan (2009-2011), as Assistant to the Secretary of State for Innovation and Energy; of the Digital Portugal Agenda and the National Program for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, (2011-2013), at the Office of the Secretary of State for Entrepreneurship, Competitiveness and Innovation.

He was also manager of innovation projects at UMIC - Unidade de Missão Inovação e Conhecimento, Presidency of the Council of Ministers (2002-2005), responsible for the design of the programs b-ON, OTIC, NEOTEC and Centers of Excellence, and collaborated with CEiiA - Centro de Engenharia e Desenvolvimento de Produto (2013-2016), in the area of Smart Cities. He also has teaching experience in Higher Education, and is the author of several articles in scientific publications, academic books and opinion articles in the area of innovation, technology and digital.
